I grew up in care, and I know how much belonging and identity shape a child’s future. In 2013, my wife Trish and I founded Wholistic Fostering to help children achieve positive outcomes.
Now we’ve launched Roots Café — a space for real stories and conversations about raising happy, successful children.
Children in the West Midlands are waiting for carers.
Right now, there aren’t enough foster carers — especially for African and Caribbean children who need homes that nurture their identity. Without them, children face instability, separation from siblings, and loss of belonging.
That’s why Roots Café exists: to inspire and recruit the next generation of carers. Even if fostering isn’t for you, your support helps us reach the people who can.
The fostering workforce is ageing — and children are waiting.
To inspire and equip carers, parents, and communities to build children’s confidence, cultural pride, and sense of belonging — so every child grows up with strong roots and the wings to achieve their potential.
Average UK foster carer age: 55+.
African and Caribbean heritage children are over-represented in care — but under-matched with carers who can support their identity.
Without a new generation stepping forward, more children will face placements that don’t fit their needs.
Roots Café exists to change this — by inspiring people to foster, connecting them with the right agency, and building a network of identity-positive carers.
How Roots Café Works (3 steps)
Step 1
Attend a conversation-led event (in person or online).
Step 2
Learn, connect, and explore fostering opportunities.
Step 3
Take action — become a carer, or refer someone who can.
